Methanol vs. Ethanol: An Overview

In smaller quantities, it may relax the mind and allow some individuals to participate more easily in otherwise stressful social situations. Today, upward of 98 percent of gasoline sold in the U.S. contains some amount of ethanol. The most common ratio is 90 percent gasoline (another hydrocarbon, if you’re keeping score) to 10 percent ethanol.

This is because non-ethanol, or lower concentrations of ethanol, may not be as effective in killing as many different types of microbes. For the production of some compounds, ethyl alcohol is an essential reactant; for example, ester formation, polymer production, etc. requires ethyl alcohol as a reactant. The most common chemical reactions of ethyl alcohol include dehydration, halogenation, combustion and oxidation.

Both alcohols are effective at killing germs when used in concentrations over 60 percent, but there’s some evidence that ethyl alcohol is less damaging to your skin. The hydrogen atoms are slightly positive because the bonding electrons are pulled toward the very electronegative oxygen atoms. The largest single use of ethanol is as an engine fuel and fuel additive. Hydrous ethanol (about 95% ethanol and 5% water) can be used as fuel in more than 90% of new gasoline-fueled cars sold in the country. Tertiary alcohols are generally resistant to oxidation under mild conditions. In essence, ethanol is a subset of the broader category of alcohols. Ethanol produced either by fermentation or by synthesis is obtained as a dilute aqueous solution and must be concentrated by fractional distillation. Direct distillation can yield at best the constant-boiling-point mixture containing 95.6 percent by weight of ethanol.
